Frequently asked questions
How many papers do Grade 12 students sit at the ESSLCE?
Six. Both Natural Science and Social Science stream students sit Mathematics, English, and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Natural Science adds Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Social Science adds Geography, History, and Economics.
Can I change my stream in Grade 12?
Not formally. Stream is set at the end of Grade 10 under the new curriculum (Grade 11 under the old). If you suspect you chose wrong, talk to your school's guidance counselor; the ESSLCE paper you sit follows your registered stream.
When should I start serious Grade 12 ESSLCE prep?
Day one of Grade 12. Students who wait until the final term consistently underperform students who built daily study habits in the first month. Past-paper drilling, even one paper a week, separates the top decile from the rest.
Do I need different study materials per stream?
Some — the Mathematics paper differs slightly between streams, and the stream-specific subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology for Natural; Geography/History/Economics for Social) are obviously separate. The English and SAT papers are shared across streams.
What pass rate should I plan for?
The historical Ethiopian ESSLCE pass rate is well under 50% nationally. This is not meant to discourage — it is meant to set the planning standard. Students who treat the ESSLCE casually fail. Students who treat it as a year-long project consistently pass.
