Grade 11 in Ethiopia: Stream Subjects and Foundation Prep

Grade 11 is the foundation year. There is no national exam at the end of Grade 11, but the strength of your Grade 11 mastery is what makes the Grade 12 ESSLCE feel either manageable or impossible. Students who treat Grade 11 as a year to coast through almost universally struggle the following year.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a national exam at the end of Grade 11?

No. The Ethiopian national matric (ESSLCE) is only at the end of Grade 12. Grade 11 typically ends with school-administered or regional exams that count toward your school grade but not toward university placement.

What subjects do I take in Grade 11?

After choosing your stream at the end of Grade 10, Natural Science students take Mathematics, English, SAT, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Social Science students take Mathematics, English, SAT, Geography, History, and Economics.

How much should I be studying in Grade 11?

Treat Grade 11 with Grade-12-level seriousness. The students who pass the ESSLCE with strong placement scores almost universally built daily study habits in Grade 11. The ones who struggle almost universally did not.

Should I start ESSLCE past papers in Grade 11?

In the second half of Grade 11, yes — for the topics that overlap with the Grade 12 curriculum. Grade 11 Math, Physics, and Chemistry all seed Grade 12 versions of the same topics, and previewing the question style in Grade 11 is a strong advantage.

Can I switch streams between Grade 11 and Grade 12?

Not formally — stream is set at the end of Grade 10. If you discover in Grade 11 that you picked the wrong stream, talk to your school counselor; informal subject overlap may be possible, but the ESSLCE paper you sit follows your registered stream.
